Well, to be fair, the 'dominant player' shifts almost every generation. I think that's in part because each generation requires a wholesale "restart". Or at least, that used to be the case.

But now, there's so much emphasis on backwards compatibility and ecosystems that live outside individual pieces of hardware - the whole game has changed.
