Very interesting piece. I must admit, this whole phenomenon took me by surprise too. That is to say, I didn't know it was a "thing" until Lady Dimitrescu apparently brought it into mainstream consciousness.

That said, I suppose I've always assumed that "if something - anything - exists, there's probably a fetish for it". I suppose what's surprising isn't so much that the fetish exists, but that it's become such a widespread meme. Maybe it's just a function of this type of character - a super-tall woman - being a prominent villain in a prominent video game, and that itself being incredibly rare (perhaps unprecedented?)
