This is a fascinating article. Thank you for writing it. While I'm most familiar with this phenomenon in gaming specifically, I do see it everywhere - even down to which grocery chain people prefer (weirdly enough).
The funny thing with gaming is, I've always wondered why anyone who is passionate about games would want to dismiss an entire branch of the industry (whether it's a console - or even consoles in general, if you belong to the PC Master Race).
I say that because surely if you're a passionate gamer, you want to see/try/experience a wide range of different experiences. I mean, evidently not, but I always figured that would be a general goal for most gamers. I would certainly say that I'm fairly omnivorous and I always like to try new experiences - for me it's always about wanting to see something I've never seen before.
Then again, I also acknowledge that many folks - perhaps the majority - are in the position where they can only realistically commit to one platform and purchase a handful of games at most each year. In those circumstances, it makes more sense that you'd continually reinforce your decision so that you avoid FOMO as much as possible.
I don't know, I'm rambling. I just think this is a fascinating topic in general and it's particularly interesting when applied to gaming.
