Paper Mario is a great example of how Nintendo continually experiment with their traditional franchises. I often find it surprising when people complain about "Mario sequels", as if each Mario game is the same thing.

One of the hallmarks of Mario as a character is that he is used as a vehicle to explore new ideas on a regular basis. This is true even in the mainline Mario games, but to an even greater degree in the spin-off titles like Paper Mario.
