I've had this experience so many times. Over recent years I've deliberately gone back to numerous games that I never finished as a kid.

One type of game I was always too intimidated to play for years were CRPGs. But recently I've been playing Pillars of Eternity and somehow managing to get to grips with the D&D-style combat system. I certainly haven't finished it, but just being able to play it feels like a win...
