I don’t think this piece should be read as an “attempt to explain away the failure this game was”. That seems like a pretty uncharitable read.

Bear in mind that JBO had responsibility around a very specific part of the experience. He was not the product manager for the entire project.

This piece reflects the role he played, and it is an earnest attempt to reflect on lessons learned. It should be read and understood in that context.
